Child Dentistry

We want to make sure that every child’s first visit to the dentist is a positive one. For this reason, we offer gentle paediatric dentistry and use a variety of techniques to ensure that children feel relaxed and have an enjoyable dental experience.

Your Child’s First Visit

We recommend most children see a dentist by the time they’re around four years old. At this stage, they’ll have all of their baby teeth and understand what we have to say about caring for their smile. In the lead up to their first visit, we encourage parents to bring their children with them to their own appointments. This way they’ll learn how normal and routine a dentist visit is.

At Whites Dental Care, we work at your child’s pace, usually starting with a brief exam where we “count” their teeth with a special mirror and light. If they’re comfortable, we’ll apply a disclosing dye that shows where to brush their teeth. Then we’ll polish their teeth, take some X-rays and build their confidence. From there we can see where teeth are developing and if there are any issues that need to be addressed.

The first visit is always informative in nature. We’ll share brushing tips with your child and guide you through common Q&As about their smile’s development.

Brushing Your Child’s Teeth

Until your child can tie their own shoes, you’ll want to help them brush their teeth two-three times a day. If their teeth are touching side-by-side, be sure to make flossing a part of your everyday oral care routine.

As your child gets older, encourage them to start brushing independently. Just be sure to supervise them to make sure they’re brushing well.

Preventative Dentistry

We offer fluoride treatments and fissure sealants to prevent cavities from forming in your child’s teeth.  Sealants are usually recommended on their permanent molars (back teeth), which erupt around the ages of six and 12, respectively. As they only take a few minutes to apply, we can place them during your child’s routine checkup.

Emergency Paediatric Dentistry

Our practice provides same-day dental emergency care to children of all ages. If your child has a broken or knocked-out tooth, dental abscess or toothache, we can arrange to see your child on the same day. If it’s after hours or on the weekend, we’re also available to reach by phone.
